Inhabitat's Week in Green: the power plant you can ski, and NASA's orbiting Nanosail-D

www.removehunger.com
This week we saw new horizons dawn for green transportation as NASA's Nanosail-D became the first solar sail spacecraft to orbit the earth and President Obama issued a call for one million electric vehicles in his State of the Union Address. We also test drove the recently released electric Mini Cooper and took a look at several transportation breakthroughs that could clean up car emissions - researchers have developed an air pollution-fighting road treatment and Cella Energy claims to have created an emission free gas that costs $1.50 per gallon.

In other news, this week Qatar showcased designs for 9 sustainable stadiums for the 2022 World Cup and BIG unveiled plans for a plant-wrapped waste to power plant that doubles as a ski slope. Super cities are on the rise in Asia as China announced plans to construct a mega-city the size of Switzerland and SOM unveiled a masterplan for a cutting-edge green tech city for Hanoi. On the other hand, Dubai's architecture of excess is fading fast as a report revealed that the emirate's world-shaped archipelago of islands is sinking into the sea.

We also showcased the latest in portable tech as we brought you a brilliant Fire Department iPhone appthat stands to save lives, and we rounded up our five favorite phone-charging green gadgets. And if you're looking for a case to carry it all in, check out these chic quilted iPad bags - just the thing to keep your kit cozy and protected during this month's blizzards.

Samsung adds Lovefilm streaming to UK Blu-ray players

www.removehunger.com
Lovefilm, the closest thing Europe has to an answer to Netflix, was recently swallowed whole by the Amazon juggernaut, but that doesn't seem to have stunted its progress toward ubiquitous availability. Samsung has just announced its intent to include Lovefilm movie streaming as an app on all of its Blu-ray players in the UK, enhancing both the subscription service's profile and its own claim to providing the user with multifunctional, "smart" technology. It's disappointing not to see this rollout effective across all of Lovefilm's European markets, but we guess small steps are better than no steps.

Scientists stumble upon bomb-sniffing laser with a boomerang effect

www.removehunger.com
You might think of a laser as light forced into a single, directed beam, but scientists have recently discovered that if you fire a laser in one direction, the air itself can fire another right back. Using a 226nm UV pump laser, researchers at Princeton University managed to excite oxygen atoms to the point that they emit infrared light along the same channel as the original beam, except this time pointed back where it came from. Since the return beam's chemistry depends on the particles in the air to generate the return beam, the "backward laser" could potentially carry the signature of those particles back to the source and help identify them there. That seems to be the entire goal, in fact -- the project, funded by an Office of Naval Research program on "Sciences Addressing Asymmetric Explosive Threats," hopes that such a laser can ID bombs from a distance by hunting for trace chemicals in the air. Sounds like the perfect addition to our terahertz specs, and one step closer to the tricorder of our dreams.

Ford Focus Electric unlikely to support DC quick-charging, slower than the Leaf after all?

www.removehunger.com
At its unveiling at CES, Ford missed no opportunity to talk up the ability of its Focus Electric to charge in half the time of the Nissan Leaf when connected to a Level 2 (220 - 240V) charger, of the sort that Best Buy will gladly install for you for just $1,499. Three to four hours is all it should take, indeed impressive compared to the eight hours the Leaf needs at the same voltage. However, the story doesn't end there, as the Leaf has another trick up its sleeve: DC fast-charging via the CHAdeMO standard. That gives 80 miles of range in just 30 minutes and, while not a global standard yet, it's certainly trying to be. The SAE is working on its own DC quick-charger standard, and that's the pony Ford is looking to back, saying:

Fast charge will not be included on the Focus Electric until an industry standard has been set by SAE. Once an approved/accepted standard is in place, we will work on getting the car ready for [it].
That leaves us with two questions. First, will the SAE get its standard finalized before Ford gets the Focus Electric finalized? Second, will the SAE standard be compatible with the Japanese CHAdeMO standard? Sadly, our magic eight ball is not giving us much hope on either account.

What is Android?...........

Android Application Framework........

By providing an open development platform, Android offers developers the ability to build extremely rich and innovative applications. Developers are free to take advantage of the device hardware, access location information, run background services, set alarms, add notifications to the status bar, and much, much more.

Developers have full access to the same framework APIs used by the core applications. The application architecture is designed to simplify the reuse of components; any application can publish its capabilities and any other application may then make use of those capabilities (subject to security constraints enforced by the framework). This same mechanism allows components to be replaced by the user.

Underlying all applications is a set of services and systems, including:

  • A rich and extensible set of Views that can be used to build an application, including lists, grids, text boxes, buttons, and even an embeddable web browser
  • Content Providers that enable applications to access data from other applications (such as Contacts), or to share their own data
  • A Resource Manager, providing access to non-code resources such as localized strings, graphics, and layout files
  • A Notification Manager that enables all applications to display custom alerts in the status bar
  • An Activity Manager that manages the lifecycle of applications and provides a common navigation backstack

Ramesh gives go-ahead to Posco steel plant

New Delhi: After putting the project on hold last year, Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh today granted conditional clearance for South Korean major Posco's USD 12 billion steel mill project in Orissa.

The Ministry, while granting conditional green clearance for steel-cum-captive-power plant and a captive minor port, however, sought Orissa Government's assurances before it can give final approval for diversion of 1253 hectares of forest land for the project, mooted as the single biggest foreign direct investment in India.

"Environmental clearance for the steel-cum-captive power plant is being accorded with 28 additional conditions over and above stipulated in the original environmental clearance of July 19, 2007," Ramesh said in his order.

"The environmental clearance for captive port is being accorded with 32 additional conditions over and above stipulated in the original environmental clearance of May 15, 2007," the order signed by the Minister said.

Ramesh also asked Orissa government to give a categorical assurance that those claiming to be dependent on or cultivating the land in the Posco project area do not belong to the other traditional forest dwellers (OTFD) category under the Forest Rights Act, 2006.

This, according to him, would make it clear that there are no legally tenable claims of non-tribals wanting recognition as OTFDs under the FRA.

"Final approval of diversion of 1253 hectares of forest land for the Posco project would be granted as soon as this assurance of the state government is received by the MoEF," the Minister said.

In August last year, Environment Ministry had directed the Orissa government to stop land acquisition for Korean steel giant Posco because it violates the Forest Rights Act.

The step was taken on the basis of a ground report submitted by a three-member committee set up by the Environment and Tribal Affairs Ministries.

The state government and Pohang Steel Company (POSCO), signed an MoU on June 22, 2005 for setting up an integrated steel plant of a total capacity of 12 million tonnes per annum at Paradeep in Jagatsinghpur district.

The plant would be located on the northwestern bank of the Jatadharmohan river creek, 12 km south of the Paradeep Port requiring a total of 1620.496 hectares of land of which 1253.225 hectares is forest land and would affect eight villages in Erasama block of Kujang Tehsil.

The MoU also envisaged that the company would develop and operate a mining project in areas allocated by the government; a transportation project which includes a dedicated railway line, road and port; integrated township and water supply infrastructure.

But the project was delayed over green issues and protests by local residents who alleged that the setting up of plant would affect their largely agriculture and forest-based livelihoods.

MERCEDES BENZ F800

Mercedes Benz has launched his new generation car .The car is using hydrogen instead of petrol or diesel and will give out water vapour .But what probably of greater interest to most of you is its styling, which is everyone's first peek at what the next-generation CLS-Class sedan is going to look like.plug in hybrid is the new concept system that's basically an offshoot of the V6 light-hybrid setup found in the S400 sedan. Mercedes says this new plug-in gas-electric system, which is good for over 400 combined horsepower, gives the car an EV-only .
The F800 concept also introduces two new technologies that will doubtless appear in upcoming models. Distronic Plus Traffic Jam Assistant is an enhanced version of Mercedes' active cruise control system, which can now steer the car through curves as long as it's traveling under 25 mph. Neat. Also new is the Pre-Safe 360-degree system, which expands the existing Pre-Safe collision detection/mitigation system to the rear of the car.

Saturnian moon ocean full of gas.....

New data from NASA's Cassini spacecraft indicates the Saturnian moon Enceladus may have a fizzy ocean capable of harbouring life.

The findings could explain the vast icy plumes of water that spray into space through fissures - known as tiger stripes - on the moon's frozen surface.

Lead Cassini planetary scientist Dr Dennis Matson from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena California, says "geophysicists expected Enceladus to be a lump of ice, cold, dead and uninteresting".

Instead scientists have recently discovered the moon is covered with geysers shooting plumes of water vapour, icy particles and organic compounds.

Matson says many researchers viewed the icy jets as proof of a large subterranean body of water.

Pockets of liquid water with temperatures around 0°C near the surface could explain the watery plumes.

Cassini's instruments detected have carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and various hydrocarbons in the plumes gas.

In 2009, the spacecraft's cosmic dust analyser found sodium and potassium salts together with carbonates locked in the plumes' icy particles, strengthening the underground ocean hypothesis.

New touchscreen technology based on low-cost materials Indium?

http://www.removehunger.com/ Techeye team  has come up with a new touchscreen display that doesn't require rare and expensive raw materials such as indium.

Indium-tin-oxide (ITO) is normally used for the wafer-thin electrode under the glass surface of a touchscreen display - it's excellent at conducting slight currents and lets the colours of the display show through clearly.
Unfortunately, the stuff is in very short supply, making a readily-available alternative something of a holy grail for the industry. The US Geological Survey reckons that the world supply will be exhausted by 2020 at the latest.

But the Fraunhofer team says it's found an alternative that's just as good - and vastly cheaper. Its main components are carbon nanotubes and low-cost polymers

Black money: Top court gives India govt time till Feb 3

ww.removehunger.com The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the Central government to file its plan of action on dealing with the black money issue by February 3.

"We want to know what steps you have taken against the people who have accumulated so much money in foreign banks. What are the sources of the money," said the apex court.

"You are aware of some names; have you set law in motion against them? And why are you repeatedly talking about tax issues only?" the SC asked the government.

"Looking at the issue from the taxation point of view is just one aspect but there are other serious matters associated with the black money which we are concerned about.”
The government faced the SC wrath two days after it held a press conference to disclose its strategy in dealing with Indian money in foreign banks.
“The government has nothing to hide. We can't get any information on black money unless there is legal framework. Whatever information we have got is on condition of secrecy. We have given names to Supreme Court,” Mukherjee said.
“India has initiated process of negotiation with 65 countries to broaden the scope of Article concerning Exchange of Information to specifically allow for exchange of banking information and information regarding taxpayers not covered by DTAA,” he added.

NASA INTRODUCING "MOONBASE ALPHA" A 3-D GAME SET ON THE MOON...

A meteor strikes, damaging solar arrays and life support systems, and as you watch the billowing (smoke billowed up in to the sky) dust cloud move ominously (sun darkened) toward your lunar (related with moon) camp, you have to restore critical systems and oxygen flow. Starting July 6, a new NASA video game will let you save the day, in 3-D.
NASA is releasing a multi-player game called Moonbase Alpha, where in players assume the role of a moon exploration team member living in a lunar settlement.

INVENTION AWARDS Six Strokes of Genius...

After a lifetime of making race cars go faster, Bruce Crower's new engine uses steam to squeeze more mileage from gas…
How it Works????
After the first four conventional strokes, water is injected into the cylinder, creating steam to drive a fifth stroke for extra power. The last stroke recycles the steam water.

How do you prevent insurgents from shooting down choppers?
How do you keep a cast from itching?
How do you reinvent the brick?
And then you work: nights, weekends-for years, if you have to. You blow all your money, and then beg for more. You build prototypes, and when they fail, you build more.

 Why?
Because inventing is about solving problems, and not stopping until your solution becomes real.

Bring technology issues into sharp focus .....

With technology trends such as the cloud, social computing and mobility on everyone’s mind, the technology agenda (temporally organizied  plan for matter to be attend) is the business agenda. But the challenge of effectively using technology, compounded by both the speed at which it evolves and the sheer volume of new technologies on the market, cannot be ignored. Emerging technologies impact how clients are served, how employees communicate and companies market. They also provide security and privacy risks and solutions.
A calculated approach – monitoring, analyzing and implementing – can enable companies to adopt the right technologies quickly and benefit most.
